Building a Swimming Pool with Quad-Lock ICF

Insulated concrete formwork (ICF) offers a practical way to construct a reinforced concrete swimming pool shell while incorporating insulation into the pool walls. This early Quad-Lock pool project demonstrates the construction method that Brookforge went on to use across a range of swimming pool designs.

How Does Quad-Lock Swimming Pool Construction Work?

The Quad-Lock system uses expanded polystyrene (EPS) formwork panels connected by high-density polyethylene (HDPE) ties. The ties hold the panels in position and allow different concrete wall thicknesses to be specified to suit the structural design. The lightweight components are straightforward to transport to site and assemble into the required pool shape.

During construction, horizontal and vertical steel reinforcement is installed in accordance with the structural design. Pool fittings and pipe penetrations are positioned before the concrete is poured, and temporary bracing supports the formwork to help maintain straight, correctly aligned walls.

Concrete is then poured into the cavity between the insulation panels, forming a reinforced concrete pool shell. The internal surface can subsequently be prepared, waterproofed and finished with tiles, as appropriate to the project specification.

Why Use Insulated Concrete Formwork for a Pool?

ICF combines a structural concrete wall with insulation on both sides. For pool owners considering energy efficiency, this approach can help reduce heat transfer through the pool walls, although overall running costs also depend on the pool cover, water temperature, heating system and operating conditions.

The modular formwork also lends itself to a variety of swimming pool sizes and layouts. Successful installation still depends on suitable structural engineering, careful reinforcement, correctly positioned fittings and a properly designed waterproofing and finishing system.
