Rehab pool needs a second lease of life CONT.
As part of an exciting redevelopment project, the 18-metre heated indoor pool at the Ovingdean centre in Brighton is undergoing a full-scale refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards and extend its lifespan.
The pool has already seen major structural upgrades, starting with a raised base to achieve a uniform water depth of 1.35 metres. New main drains have been cast directly into a reinforced concrete slab, ensuring a strong and durable foundation.
All suction and return fittings have been replaced and are now piped back to a newly upgraded plant room, designed to deliver efficient circulation and filtration. The original scum channels have been removed and replaced with high-capacity box skimmers, which have been cast into the pool wall and plumbed into the new system for improved surface water management.
In addition, new inlets and vacuum points have been strategically added along the length of the pool to enhance water flow and maintenance access. For aesthetics and safety, eight LED underwater lights—four on each side—have been installed to provide clean, even lighting throughout the pool.
To prepare for waterproofing and final finishes, a 3mm fibreglass mesh membrane is currently being applied to the pool walls and floor. This layer forms a key part of the tanking system before tiling begins, helping to ensure the pool remains watertight for years to come.
